MRC North provides support programs dedicated to children and families, primarily through our weekly Multicultural Playgroup. Other child- and family-focused events will be listed on our News & Events page.
MRC North has run the Multicultural Playgroup since 2007, and supports families with children under the age of five.
Parenting in a new country, with different norms and laws can raise many challenges.
The Multicultural Playgroup supports families to access resources and services, assists families with family relationship issues and conflict and develops the confidence of parents in a new country.
The Multicultural Playgroup is funded through Communities for Children and holds its sessions at the Haig Community Space in Mowbray. Weekly sessions may include the following:
- Activities such as painting, building blocks, books and creative activities,
- Guest speakers e.g. a child health nurse, dietician or dentist,
- Excursions to local resources, such as the library, museums and child friendly activities
The Playgroup welcomes around 50 families annually including families from Afghanistan, Burma, Bhutan and Sudan.
