Community Development
HELPING YOU TO HELP YOURSELVES!
Working together with ethnic communities.
What does the Community Project Officer do?
The Community Project Officer talks to newly arrived people and people from more settled ethnic communities in order to offer support and expertise from the Migrant Resource Centre.
This support can include:
- Organising workshops and information sessions that will inform people about life and services.
- Applying for grants to set up arts and craft workshops and applying for funding to address problems in the communities.
- Supporting people to set up their own groups and resourcing them in the best possible way.
- Working with young people and new emerging communities to find their links to service and help developing their resources.
- Addressing problems in the community by using community development tools.
- Organising community consultations.
- Assisting ethnic communities with grant applications.
- Running a Craft Group for Women every Tuesday from 12pm to 2pm (child care available).
- Organising service providers meetings in Launceston and the NW Coast.
- Coordinating the Human Rights Committee of Launceston.
Drive for Life Program
The Drive 4 Life program provides driving practice for clients with an L1 and L2-licence with help by driving volunteers in a car with a second brake owned and maintained by MRC North.
The program includes Road Safety information sessions and workshops and aims to help migrants/refugees to obtain their driver’s licence and provide them with a better chance for employment, independence and to support the settlement process.Community Celebrations
The Community Project Officer organises multicultural community celebrations and awareness raising events. She helps people with cultural performance skills make their contributions to those events, if they would like to take part.
Working with or for other Service Providers
The Community Project Officer liaises with other service providers and aims at increasing the understanding of those service providers to the situation of those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds by:
- Providing cross-cultural training sessions.
- Networking at service providers meetings.
- Participating in advisory committees to government bodies.
- Providing input into policy development.
